It has been the fulfilment of a tantalising prospect: that filmmaker Pat ­Collins got to know novelist John McGahern personally while making the 2005 ­Ifta-winning ­documentary John McGahern: A Private World only enriches the former’s new screen adaptation.

Published in 2002, That They May Face the Rising Sun tells of Joe and Kate, who have returned to rural Leitrim after living in London, and the locals who interact with them over the turning ­seasons.
